“Korean Marines did everything we did, and did it well, whether taking hills or holding ground.”

British Royal Marines and US Marines fought side-by-side under harrowing conditions during the Chosin (Changjin) Reservoir campaign. The Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROKMC), formed in 1949 on the American model and guided by USMC advisors, provided a hard-fighting infantry regiment to the 1st Marine Division for much of the war.

One USMC veteran regarded the Korean Marines as "some of the most gutsy, doughty, dependable fighters ever to grace the planet Earth." The ROKMC was the first of several allied Marine outfits the US Marines would help create in the Cold War, and the mutual respect that ensued reflected the Leathernecks' earlier experience forming constabulary units in Central America.
