Marines--Cold Weather Equipment and Training

“It was a wonder that we all didn’t freeze.”

ATTRIBUTION: PFC Harold L. Mulhausen, rifleman, 7th Marines

The Chosin (Changjin) survivors cursed their government-issues “Shoe-pacs,” rubber- soled hunting boots, intended for stationary use in duck blinds. The Marines, always mobile, found the “Shoe-pacs” unsafe on the move. Sweaty socks froze solid, leading to crippling frostbite. New thermal barrier boots solved the problem by the next winter. The Corps established a cold-weather training camp at Pickel Meadows, California, where Korea-bound Marines learned to wage mountain winter warfare.
